Objective: Parenting practices influence child behavioral development, but the psychological pathways in children with intellectual disability (ID) remain unclear. We examined whether maternal mental health mediated the association between parenting style and behavioral problems among Iranian mothers of children with ID aged 7–10 years.
Methods. In this cross-sectional study of 100 mother-child dyads, we measured behavioral problems (Rutter questionnaire), parenting-style (standardized measure), maternal well-being and distress, and child cognitive ability (Raven's Progressive Matrices). Mediation was tested with PROCESS v4.1 (Model 4; 5,000 bootstrap resamples); indirect effects were significant when 95% bias-corrected confidence intervals excluded zero.
Results. Of 100 children (44 boys and 56 girls), 82 had mild and 18 had moderate problems. Maternal well-being and distress differed across parenting styles (both p < 0.001): authoritative parenting was associated with highest well-being (M = 53.78) and lowest distress (M = 32.80), whereas authoritarian parenting showed the reverse (M = 33.03; 46.42). Moderate problems were more frequent among children in rental housing (p = 0.026), with authoritarian parenting (p < 0.001), and in higher grades (p = 0.027). Maternal well-being mediated the associations of authoritarian (β = −0.31), authoritative (β = −0.31) and permissive (β = −0.18) parenting with moderate problems; distress mediated those of authoritarian (β = 0.37) and permissive (β = 0.40) parenting. Mediation was indirect-only for authoritative and inconsistent for permissive parenting.
Conclusions. Maternal mental health, particularly well-being, statistically mediated the association between parenting styles and behavioral problems in children with ID. These factors may be targets for family-focused interventions, although the cross-sectional design precludes causal inference.
