Background: Scoliosis is a three dimensional deformity of spine which can be treated by use of various treatment approaches. Use of braces is one of the treatment methods used to control curve progression, and to decrease scoliotic curve. The aim of this review was to evaluate the efficiency of Milwaukee brace (MB) on scoliosis curve progression and control based on available literature.
Method: A search was done in some data bases including ISI Web of Sciences, PubMed, Google Scholar, Ebsco and Scopus. Some key words such as Milwaukee brace, Milwaukee orthosis were used in combination with scoliosis. The quality of the studies was evaluated by Down and Black tool.
Results: Based on the mentioned key words 18 papers were selected including, 11 on efficiency of MB, 3 on psychological issues and quality of life, one on combination of exercise and brace, and 3 on comparison between braces. The quality of the studies varied between 6 and 18. The results of various studies showed that MB control the progression of the curve in scoliosis deformity and influence the natural history of scoliosis.
Conclusion: The results of various studies confirmed that although MB control the progression of scoliosis curve, it is not comparable with other available braces, which may be due to the mechanism of action. It is recommended that due to advantages of MB a combinations of transverse and traction forces will be used to control and decrease the scoliosis deformity.
