Objectives: Auditory processing disorder (APD) is a well-recognized impairment causing problems in child's learning ability and communication skills. Therefore, identifying this disorder in children is a priority. The prevalence of this disorder in children in Iranian society has not yet been widely investigated. This study Aimed to identify the elementary school students at risk of APD in Isfahan, Iran.
Methods: Participants were 605 school aged children selected from 15 elementary schools in five districts of Isfahan city. Auditory processing tests from the MAPA (Multiple Auditory Processing Assessment) tests battery were performed on these samples.
Results: The prevalence of APD was 5.57% in girls and 10.63%in boys. The overall prevalence of APD was 7.93%, with a male-to-female ratio of 1.9.
Discussion: The prevalence reported in this study is consistent with global values. It is absolutely necessary to screen this disorder in children with accurate diagnostic tools with acceptable sensitivity to minimize adverse effect.
