Background and aim: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is classified as a non-communicable disease that impacts millions globally. Chronic kidney disease is associated with physical, economic, psychological, and social burden for patients and their healthcare providers. The purpose of this study was to determine the levels of psychological well-being and social support in individuals undergoing hemodialysis and investigate the correlation between social support and psychological well-being among participants.
Method: A descriptive correlational study design was conducted at the Al-Amal Dialysis Centre in Kirkuk City from November 20, 2024, to May 30, 2025. A non-probability purposive sample consisting of 260 patients undergoing hemodialysis was selected. Data were collected through a questionnaire consisting of sociodemographic characteristics, General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), and Social Support Scale for Healthcare Providers. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 26.0.
Results: Most participants were male (56.2%), aged 60-69 years (32.4%), with low education levels (27.3%), and barely sufficient economic status (49.2%). Most patients demonstrated moderate levels of perceived social support (63%) and psychological well-being. Significant relationships were found between educational level, marital status, and perceived social support. A significant positive correlation existed between overall psychological well-being and social support (r = .270, p = .001).
Conclusions and Recommendation: Most patients had moderate levels of perceived social support and psychological well-being ,and there is a significant relationship between (educational level, marital status) and social support and psychological wellbeing. Higher levels of social support were associated with better psychological well-being among chronic hemodialysis patients. Healthcare provider support individually contributes to enhancing psychological well-being of dialysis patients.
