Background: Low back pain accounts for the majority of the global burden of musculoskeletal diseases, and it has been shown to affect an individual's quality of life.
Objectives: This study aimed to examine the correlation between pain, disability, and psychological distress with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in low back pain patients.
Methods: This study involved 74 LBP patients. Pain intensity, disability, psychological distress (depression, anxiety, and stress), and quality of life were measured using the Visual Analogue Scale, Oswestry Disability Index, Depression Anxiety Stress Scales 42, and Short Form 36 questionnaires. Data were analyzed univariately and bivariately.
Results: HRQoL was seen to be negatively correlated with pain, disability, and psychological distress. There were significant but weak correlations between pain and almost all SF-36 domains, except for the GH (r -0.455, p<0.001) and SF (r -0.433, p<0.001), which showed moderate correlations. Significant correlations were also shown between disability and all SF-36 domains, but only the PF (r -0.702, p<0.001) and PCS (r -0.688, p<0.001) showed strong correlations. Anxiety was observed to have significant correlations with all SF-36 domains, but a strong correlation was only shown between anxiety and quality of vitality (r -0.421, p<0.001). In contrast, depression and stress were only significantly correlated with PF (r -0.232, p 0.047 and r -0.252, p 0.030), VT (r -0.421, p<0.001 and r -0.339, p 0.003), RE (r -0.285, p 0.014 and r -0.331, p 0.004); MH (r -0.423, p<0.001 and r -0.293, p 0.011); MCS (r -0.516, p<0.001 and r -0.252, p 0.030), and between depression and SF (r 0.403, p<0.001).
Conclusion: There was a significant negative correlation between pain, disability, and psychological distress with the quality of life of patients suffering from low back pain.
