Abstract
Objective: To investigate whether group training of neurodevelopmental handling skills for parents of children with cerebral palsy effectively empowers parents and improves children's functional mobility, and whether any benefits are maintained.
Design: A randomized, single-blind clinical trial.
Participants: Fifty children with spastic cerebral palsy (3-10 years).
Intervention: The experimental group received 8 weeks of handling and positioning skills training plus usual therapy, while the control group received only usual therapy.
Main measures: Outcomes included gross motor function, functional mobility, and family empowerment, measured at baseline, 4, 8, 12, and 16 weeks by a blinded assessor.
Results: After controlling for pre-intervention values, no statistically significant differences in gross motor function or mobility function were observed between the control and intervention groups. However, family empowerment scores were significantly higher in the intervention group at various time points throughout the study.
Conclusion: Group training in handling skills improved family empowerment with sustained positive effects.
