Abstract:   (65 Views)
Objectives: To examine the effect of hallux valgus severity on dynamic balance in community dwelling older adults.

Methods: This comparative study was conducted on 29 functionally independent older adults who were presented with hallux valgus. The subjects were divided into mild hallux valgus severity group and moderate/severe hallux valgus severity group based on Manchester Scale. Four Square Step Test and Timed-Up and Go Test were used to measure their dynamic balance. Independent t-test was performed for comparing the balance performance between the two groups.

Results: Significant differences were observed between the groups. Compared to subjects with moderate and severe hallux valgus severity, those with mild hallux valgus severity performed significantly better in Four Square Step Test (p<0.05) and Timed-Up and Go Test (p<0.05). With reference to the normative cut-off value of Four Square Step Test, all the subjects were categorized as fallers.

Discussion: Hallux valgus negatively impacts the dynamic balance of community dwelling older adults, especially in those with moderate and severe grading of severity. This suggests varying treatment strategies may be required when managing falls and balance issues in the older adults with hallux valgus deformities.
