Background: Verbal abuse among healthcare professionals is a common and pervasive problem, and workplace violence is a prevalent phenomenon in the global healthcare business.
Objectives: to find out the relationship between verbal violence and psychological stress in Wasit city.
Methods: We conducted a correlational-descriptive study using a convenient sample of 248 nurses in Wasit City, Iraq. We gathered data from November 5, 2023, to February 7, 2024. We collected the data using a dual-part self-report questionnaire. Part, one consisted of questions about the participants' traits; Part two covered verbal abuse in the health sector survey; and Part three included the Job-Related Stress Scale. We applied Spearman's rank correlation coefficient of variance analysis to the data analysis.
Results: The mean age for nurses is 29.6±6 years, and most of them were female 53.6% of 46.4% males. Approximately 49.2% of nurses are exposed to moderate levels of verbal violence. The mean of psychological stress significantly between males and females (63.7%) of nurses perceive moderate psychological stress related to the workplace. There is a strong positive relationship between exposure to verbal violence and psychological stress among nurses at p-value= 0.001. The level of stress is increased as exposure to verbal violence increases.
Discussion: Nearly half of the nurses in this study experienced verbal abuse, and over half experienced psychological stress. The two had a very close relationship. This implies an association between verbal abuse directed against nurses and a stressful work environment. More research on this cause-and-effect link may be conducted in the future. Furthermore, since some registered nurses reported higher rates of violence than others, further studies should examine how an individual's traits or the workplace environment affect risk.
